Players have asked for some general guidelines for fair play. NetSports suggests:
  1. Talk quietly when standing near tennis courts in use

  2. NEVER walk along the back of a court when a point is in play. Wait until it is over

  3. Tennis attire should include good runners or tennis shoes. Most casual sportswear is acceptable. Males should not remove their shirts, nor wear singlets

  4. Spin a racquet to decide who serves first. The loser chooses the end they start from

  5. When returning balls to a court or the server, roll them to the back. Never do this during a point. Retrieve balls for your team and the opposition

  6. Make line calls on your side of the net only. If in doubt, say nothing and play on. Respect the line calls of your opponents. If there is any doubt, offer to replay the point. If you are not involved in a game you may only mediate a line call if asked to do so by those involved. A fault call must be loud and immediate or else you play on. If any part of the ball lands on any part of the line that shot is in

  7. Remain calm even when playing poorly. Do not throw your racquet or yell abuse

Some basic rules:

  1. Any contact with the net during the playing of a shot forfeits the point

  2. Players may not lean over the net and play a shot

  3. In singles serve within the singles court. In doubles you may use the tramlines

  4. A double hit is only permitted if it is part of the same swing

  5. No part of the foot may touch the baseline before the serve
